On Friday 19th June, I shall be leading a party of walkers at Rothbury, in Northumberland, to the tiny hamlet of Whitton (about 1 mile); from there, we shall walk up to the Whitton Dene, on the lower slopes of the Simonside range of hills. You are very welcome to join us.
The walk goes past Sharp`s Folly, the oldest folly in the county and a listed building. We will also have the opportunity to examine some ancient Rock Art (Cup & Ring markings) situated in woodland close by the Whitton Burn - and, time permitting, we shall have a look at some Standing Stones a little higher up.
Obviously, some climbing will be involved, but nothing too strenuous - gentle slopes only. This is a walk of about 5 miles and will take approximately two hours to complete, walking at a moderate pace, allowing for a little time to `stand and stare` and take in the scenery - scenery which really is quite magnificent, if I say it myself!
Start time for the walk is 10.30: meet at the Tourist Information Centre in the centre of Rothbury, next to the church. Stout shoes/walking boots are advisable, and, you might want to bring a waterproof, just in case!
Sorry: no unaccompanied minors on this walk - and no dogs!
More info nearer the time. _________________ "Heatherland and Bentland and valleys rich with corn, God bring me to Northumberland, the land where I was born" W.W.Gibson |

An enjoyable and a most interesting (informative) walk. Left the TIC just after 10.30 - back at 12.15.
Weather had a threatening aspect when we set off, but never really came to anything, few slight showers, nothing more. Great walk, do it again soon, eh?
Next walk:
The "Glitters" Forest Burn area, by Longfram` to be announced. _________________ "Heatherland and Bentland and valleys rich with corn, God bring me to Northumberland, the land where I was born" W.W.Gibson |
